Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston disrupted due to loose horses

Trains have been disrupted between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston due to loose horses on the tracks.

Some trains have been cancelled and others delayed after three horses escaped from their field in Atherstone, Warwickshire.

The horses have now been caught but some Avanti West Coast trains will be affected until 4pm.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to passengers delayed after three horses got onto the West Coast main line near Atherstone at lunchtime.

"We have inspected the fencing and returned the horses to their field. The line has reopened but passengers should check before they travel while services return to normal.”

The 15.15 service from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston was cancelled.

Other services were delayed.

Network Rail, Tweeting from the London Euston account, added: "Apologies for delayed or cancelled services out of Euston today This is due to congestion further up the West Coast Mainline which we are working to clear and to keep everyone moving.

"Please check @nationalrailenq for the latest travel info @AvantiWestCoast "
