They had to used rope access gear to bring equipment down into the railway cut to reach the tunnel.

On Friday morning, they announced the work had been completed.

Network Rail tweeted: "Trains between Edinburgh and Glasgow are running again.

"We have cleared the flooding on the railway at Winchburgh tunnel and lines between Glasgow/ Stirling to Edinburgh are now open.

"Thank you to @fire_scot for their support and to all passengers for their patience as we dealt with the results of extreme rainfall."
