Trainline launches new split ticketing tool

UK train travel will be cheaper (Picture: Shutterstock)

Rail travel ticket provider Trainline has announced the launch of a new scheme to help its customers save money.

Called SplitSave, the new feature is estimated to save UK train travellers a huge £340 million in 2020.

The SplitSave system allows customers to ‘split tickets’ on some train routes without having to change trains or make changes to their route. It works by finding combinations of tickets that can save rail passengers money and customers simply have to show the different tickets at relevant times along their journey.

The service will be available on 64 per cent of routes nationwide. For example, Trainline says customers travelling from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston which could save as much as £80.10 and customers on the Edinburgh Waverley to London’s King’s Cross route could save £79.95.

Clare Gilmartin, CEO, Trainline said in a statement: “We’re passionate about helping our customers save as much money on train travel as possible and we think SplitSave is going to make a real difference.

“We’ve been working closely with our industry partners on this exciting new feature, as it represents another big step in our shared goal of getting more people to pick train travel over cars and flights.”

What is split ticketing?

Last year, we spoke to Mark Smith, the ‘Man in Seat 61’ and a rail expert who told us: “Split ticketing is where you buy a ticket from A to B and another from B to C, because it is cheaper than a ticket from A to C.”

For example, a one-way ticket from London to Edinburgh could cost £73.20 direct. But a train from London to York costs £18 and a ticket from York to Edinburgh costs £33.45 on the same day – a total of £51.45, saving £21.75.

The SplitSave feature is only available on Trainline’s iOS and Android apps.
