Training Your Pet? Here’s What Every Pet Parent Must Remember

Training an animal is not just about training it to obey certain orders; it is about creating a language between you and the animal. You can have a pet that is a dog, a cat, etc., but training is essential in molding the behavior of the animal, enhancing the relationship between you and the animal, and creating a peaceful environment at home. However, training an animal is not an easy process, and there are certain factors to consider when training an animal. Here are the most important factors to consider when training an animal.

Patience is key to success in training an animal

One of the biggest mistakes that pet parents make is expecting too much from the training process. Pets do not learn in a day, and you need to be patient when training an animal. If you yell at the pet, it will not learn the command, but it will get confused and anxious instead.

Consistency creates clarity

Animals need consistency and repetition to understand what you want them to do. If you say one word to command an action but use a different word the next time, you confuse the pet. Similarly, if you allow the pet to do something one day but discourage it the next, the pet will not understand what you want. For instance, if you don’t want the pet to jump on people, you should not allow it to do so at any time, even if it looks cute when it does so. Consistency in the tone, word, and rule will help the pet understand what you want faster.

Positive reinforcement works better than punishment

Rewarding the pet for its good behavior is more effective than punishing it for bad behavior. This is because the pet will repeat the behavior that you have rewarded with treats, praise, and affection. Punishing the pet will only make it fearful of you, and a fearful pet will not always be a good pet. A fearful pet will obey you, but it will also develop behavioral problems, thereby damaging the relationship between you and the pet.

Timing is everything

Pets are present-oriented animals. If they are rewarded or corrected too late, they may not be able to link it with what they did. Immediate response will help them clearly understand what is being encouraged or discouraged. If your pet sits when asked to, immediately reward them. It is an effective way of learning.

Short sessions keep them engaged

It is possible that too long a training session may be overwhelming for pets, especially young ones. Short training sessions of five to ten minutes are more effective than too-long training sessions. It is best to end training sessions with a positive note so that pets will be eager for the next session.

Understand their personality

Each animal has its own personality. Some animals may respond well to food, while others may respond better to affection or playing. Learning your animal’s personality will help you when training. When you understand their personality, you will see that your animal learns with a lot of enthusiasm.

Socialisation is a part of training

Training does not only mean training an animal to sit or stay. Training an animal on how to behave when faced with strangers or animals, or when moved to a different environment, is important.
