Training placements at BBC: In the week 17/05/10

As some operations prepare to move to Media City in Salford, the BBC is hosting a Positive Action Day at the University of Manchester later this month for disabled people and students from the BME community. The event is made up of three sessions; a BBC jobsite workshop, a CV session offering advice on producing a BBC-friendly CV and a session on freelance working. There will also be a media challenge which could help applicants win one of six training placements. Contact lisa.wilson@bbc.co.uk to opt into the event.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is expanding its apprenticeship programme and will host an open day at Port Vale Football Club on 24 May to showcase 100 new apprentice positions within the local authority, reports local blog Pits n Pots. The Council Apprentice Programme aims to train local young people and assist the council with future workforce requirements by offering apprenticeships in areas including business administration, customer services, childcare and sport.

Guernsey-based television production company Netplay TV, which produces interactive gambling shows and broadcasts on ITV1, Channel 5 and STV, has created 20 jobs for experienced marketing staff, reports BBC News. The staff will join Netplay's existing team of 15 and work at its new marketing customer contact centre and payment processing department.

The London Development Agency is working with Greater London Volunteering, the umbrella body for volunteer centres in the capital, to recruit and manage 8,000 volunteer tour guides for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games, reports Third Sector. As part of the Host City Volunteering scheme, the volunteers will show visitors around designated areas and provide information about the games.

Kelman, an energy technology company in Lisburn, Northern Island, is to take on 104 new staff following investment from its parent global company GE and Invest NI. According to BBC News, the staff will be working in advanced manufacturing, research and development and technical support roles and on new projects in power generation and energy efficiency.
