Training camps and other pre-Games events for the teams of countries competing in the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics have been canceled in 45 municipalities, Tamayo Marukawa, the minister in charge of the Tokyo Games, revealed at a press conference Friday.
She said that the main reason behind the cancellations is the spread of the novel coronavirus, and that 32 of the 45 municipalities did so at the request of the countries whose athletes they were to host.
"It is unfortunate that they had to accept cancellations under very difficult circumstances," Marukawa said.
The government intends to encourage online exchanges to prevent the spread of infections.
