Trainer pays tribute to Cheltenham winner Warthog after he is fatally injured at track

David Pipe paid tribute to Caspian Caviar Gold Cup hero Warthog after he was fatally injured on Festival Trials Day.

Back at the scene of his biggest win, the gallant grey was sent off favourite for the Paddy Power 45 Sleeps To Cheltenham Trophy Handicap Chase, but was pulled up sharply by David Noonan after the first fence.

Unfortunately it was found he had fractured a foreleg and had to be put down.

Pipe confirmed the sad news on social media, a day after he lost another of his horses, Eur Gone West, at Huntingdon.

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to report that Warthog was fatally injured today. Fly high big lad, thank you for the great days," he tweeted.

Warthog won the feature race at Cheltenham's International Meeting in December for Pipe, Noonan, Professor Caroline Tisdall and Bryan Drew.

He won £108,053 in 14 races under Rules.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse said: "Warthog was taken to the racecourse stables for assessment where sadly it was found he had fractured a foreleg and had to be put down.

"Our thoughts are with everyone connected with the horse, David Pipe and his team."

Jockey Tom Scudamore, who works for Pipe, said it had been 'a very hard couple of days' following the deaths of the two horses.

The yard won the Grade Two Albert Bartlett River Don Novices' Hurdle with Ramses De Teillee earlier in the afternoon.
