Trainee Glasgow nurse and 'devoted mummy' to two children dies from covid

Tributes have been paid to a trainee Glasgow nurse and "devoted mummy" who passed away from coronavirus, leaving behind two children she had been raising alone.

Naggayi Angella, who was also known as Grace, died on Monday after being in a coma for two weeks.

The mother of two, from Uganda, lived with her children Annmarie Yiga, 12, and John Jeremiah Mugisha, aged eight, in the Parkhead area of the city with no other family members in the UK.

She worked part-time in community integrated care while studying mental health nursing at Edinburgh Napier University.

Her two children paid tribute to their mum, with daughter Annmarie writing: "“In life, we love you dearly, in death we love you still, in our hearts you hold a place no one will ever fill", with son John writing: "Mummy was a nice caring person who loved me so much".

Glasgow-based charity Ubuntu Women's Shelter confirmed news of her tragic passing on Monday, and have set up a fundraising page to help Grace's children "fulfil their Mum’s last wish" to be buried in Uganda and to help provide them some future financial stability.

They tweeted: "It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Naggayi Angella ‘Grace’, a loved member of our community and the mother of two wonderful children.

"Please join us in helping the children fulfil their Mum’s last wish to be buried in her ancestral home in Uganda and give them some financial security to fortify their uncertain journey ahead."

So far nearly £20,000 has been raised for Grace's children since the fundraiser was set up two days ago by the charity.

A tribute to Grace on the fundraising page reads: "We, the friends and family of Naggayi Angella ‘Grace’, from across the world in Kampala, Glasgow, London, Ireland, Canada have set up this fundraising appeal on behalf of her two beloved children, Annmarie and John.

"We mourn the loss of our Amazing Grace, our soul sister and spiritual guide to COVID-19. Angella was a devoted mummy to her two loving children who now walk alone, their heads held high, strong in their faith and always guided by the bright light of her deep love."
