The assailants disembarked the train at the Queanbeyan railway station. A police probe is under way into the incident.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson confirmed that the department is aware of an incident on Sunday, July 5, involving the NSW TrainLink Sydney-to-Canberra train service.

It is understood that a few passengers onboard the train got into an argument with TrainLink staff over serving alcohol. They allegedly used foul language towards the staff in front of other passengers, including children and physically assaulted the staff.

The conditions of the assaulted staff members remains unknown.

"The safety and security of all passengers and staff on our network is the number-one priority for NSW TrainLink. As this is a police matter, Transport is unable to make any further comments on the incident at this stage," the spokesperson said.

The Sunday service returning to Sydney from Canberra was disrupted following the incident, as the injured staff allegedly could not continue their duties.

Transport for NSW said it expressed regret over the distress and impact on passengers during a "rapidly evolving disruption" on one of its Canberra to Sydney services over the weekend.

NSW police are investigating the alleged assault on the train.
