Thousands of rail passengers could see their season tickets jump by more than £100 next year as inflation-busting price hikes kick in across all routes.
That's in line with the latest retail price index (RPI) - a measure of inflation which annually depicts changes in the cost of living, and, in this case, how much train fares should rise in January.
Economists predict the figures, which are due out next week, will be 2.7 to 2.9%.
In real terms, this could mean a ticket season ticket from Guildford to London St Albans – which already costs more than £3,800 – will go up another £103. Those from Oxford could see a £142 rise from £5,256 to £5,398.
RPI is typically higher than the Government’s preferred measure – the Consumer Price Index – which the Bank of England says will be 1.8% in July.
The Campaign for Better Transport’s Darren Shirley said: "Next year’s rise will come as a blow to passengers already paying thousands to endure overcrowding, delays and trains that fail to stop at stations as scheduled."
The price rise will kick in UK wide, on all 'regulated fares' - which account for around 50% of all commuter journeys.
That's despite ongoing concerns over delays, cancellations and overcrowding.
According to rail watchdog Transport Focus, travellers are missing out on more than £1million in compensation for disrupted journeys.
It said last year just 39% of eligible passengers claimed refunds for delays of 30 minutes or more, and only 18% for delays of 15 minutes or more, despite being slapped by price rises in January.
Delay Repay is a national scheme that train companies use to compensate passengers for unexpected delays or cancellations.
