"Services between those stations will be suspended. Distruption is expected until 15:45 29/09."

National Rail updated customers online saying that all lines are 'blocked'.

Replacement buses are now running between Wigan Wallgate and Southport but journeys can be tracked using the real-time tracker at NationalRail.co.uk

Some customers will be entitled to claim money back as compensation if there is a delay in completing the journey.

National Rail said "Please keep your train ticket and make a note of your journey, as both will be required to support any claim."

British Transport Police have been contacted for a comment.
