Train filmed smashing into lorry at crossing with more than 12 carriages derailing

Dramatic footage shows a train crashing into a lorry at a level crossing in Tennessee leading to more than a dozen carriages derailing.

The freight train smashed into the truck which was crossing the tracks close to the Chattanooga suburb of Collegedale, according to police.

Video shows the moment the Norfolk Southern train ploughed into the vehicle carrying a long concrete barrier in the incident at around 1.30pm on Tuesday.

News Channel 9 reported that the trailer appeared to be travelling very slowly at the time of the crash, which saw the vehicle smashed into pieces.

Several carriages of the train left the track as a result of the impact, while a section of the concrete barrier was pushed along in front of the train as a cloud of debris rises.

Two people were taken to hospital following the incident and they reportedly escaped with "minor injuries".

A Norfolk Southern representative, according to the New York Post, said: “Initial reports do not indicate any hazardous material cars involved.”

Videos filmed by witnesses show train cars lying on their side in a wooded area next to the railway tracks.

Hamilton County Public Information officer Amy Maxwell said that a lorry was carrying a 60 feet concrete barrier to a new construction but did not get fully across the track when it was hit by the train, reported local3news.com.

She said the train along with three locomotives and 10 boxcars derailed which led to a large amount of diesel fuel being spilt.

Collegedale police took to Twitter to ask residents to avoid the area around the derailment.

“There has been a train derailment at University Drive and Apison Pike. Please avoid the area and find an alternate route around,” it stated.
