Train driver and conductor killed in Stonehaven landslip tragedy named

The train driver killed in the Stonehaven crash has been named as Brett McCullough.

He lost his life alongside the train's conductor Donald Dinnie.

They both died, along with another victim, this morning as the 6.38am Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street ScotRail service crashed after heavy rain caused a landslip on the track, the Daily Record reported.

A colleague of Brett's was devastated to learn of his death.

They said: “He has a young family and a wife. He’s been in the railways for about six years and is a lovely man.”

Brett lived less than a 15 minute drive from the site of the accident.

His wife Stephanie confirmed Brett had died in the derailment but was too upset to comment about the tragedy.

Heartbroken friends and family have been paying their respects to "absolute gem" Donald Dinnie.

A grief-stricken cousin of Donald announced on Facebook tonight that her relative had been one of the victims.

Linda Spark said: "So sad that one of our relatives Donald Dinnie was a victim of the train accident in Aberdeen. Why is it always the good ones?"

The third person who died in the derailment was a passenger operator ScotRail said, alongside the driver and conductor.

In a statement on Twitter, ScotRail said: “We’ve sadly been advised by the British Transport Police that, in addition to the driver and a passenger, one of the fatalities in the Stonehaven derailment was our conductor.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of those who have lost loved ones.”

Earlier this evening The Queen sent her condolences to those affected by the crash.

"It was with great sadness that I heard of the train derailment earlier today in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire," she said.

"The Duke of Edinburgh, and entire Royal Family, join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of those who have died and those who have been injured.

"Our thanks go out to the Emergency Services for their response and dedication."

The 6.38am Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street ScotRail service crashed on Wednesday morning amid heavy rain and flooding.

British Transport Police said those injured have been taken to hospital and are not thought to be seriously hurt, adding they believe all passengers have now been accounted for.

Chief superintendent Eddie Wylie said: "This is a tragic incident and first and foremost our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have very sadly died this morning.

"We remain on scene alongside our emergency service colleagues and a major incident operation has been under way.

"I would like to reassure the public that this was not a busy service and from CCTV inquiries and witness statements we believe all passengers have been accounted for.

"However, once the area has been made safe then a full and thorough search will be conducted, which is likely to take some time."

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch said it has sent a team of inspectors to the site of a derailment near Stonehaven.

It added: “We have launched an investigation and will provide an update in the coming days.”

Rail industry sources told PA the train, comprising of a locomotive and four carriages, stopped due to a landslip and moved back along the line when it crashed into another landslip.

It is understood the locomotive and three carriages derailed and slid down an embankment with the Aslef train drivers' union saying it then caught fire.
