Train drags pickup, killing 2, at unguarded crossing

A train heading from Bangkok to Yala ploughed into a pickup truck at a level crossing in tambon Khanthulee of Tha Chana district in Surat Thani province yesterday, killing a woman and her son. Supapong Chaolan

A Bangkok-Yala express train hit a pickup truck, killing a 34-year-old woman and her 10-year-old son in tambon Khanthulee of Surat Thani's Tha Chana district yesterday.

Police were alerted to the accident at about 7.30am. The crash happened at an unguarded level crossing on a road between Ban Tham Khao Chawala and Ban Tham Namthip villages.

The locomotive of the train dragged the Isuzu pickup truck for about 400 metres before it stopped.

The victims were identified as Weerawal Semrod and her son Manoonsak. Police said Weerawan was driving her son to school, and speculated she might not have noticed the oncoming train.

The incident disrupted train services between Chumphon and Songkhla as well as services between Surat Thani and Bangkok, as workers only managed to clear the tracks in the evening.
