Train delays as lorry smashes into railway bridge

Northern Rail passengers are being warned to expect delays this morning as a lorry has smashed into a railway bridge.

Network Rail issued the warning to Northern Rail passengers this morning.

They said the incident has sparked delays between Wigan Wallgate and Salford Crescent.

They said the heavy good vehicle struck a bridge in Walkden and also hit another bridge shortly after leaving the scene.

Network Rail tweeted just after 7am: "Delays to trains between #WiganWallgate & #SalfordCrescent. Because a lorry hit our rail bridge in #Walkden - the driver drove off hitting another bridge nearby.

"Dear lorry drivers - please know the heights of your vehicles. Don’t guess.".

"Train services running through these stations may be delayed by up to 15 minutes. "
