Train crashes into car at level crossing in Essex after ‘skidding on some ice’

A train has collided with a car at a level crossing near Colchester in Essex.

Crews were called to a level crossing at Frating at 7.20am on Tuesday after reports that a passenger train had hit a car.

Essex Fire and Rescue said they believed the car ended up on the level crossing “after skidding on some ice” and then becoming stuck.

No one was hurt, despite the train hitting the car, they said.

Incident Commander Dave Bond said: “We believe the car ended up on the level crossing after skidding on some ice. The driver was then unable to move her vehicle before the next train came through the crossing.

“Thankfully the driver escaped from her car before the train arrived, and although the train struck the car, there are no injuries to the vehicle driver, the train driver or any passengers.

“We’re now working in partnership with other agencies and waiting for instructions from the Railway Incident Officer on our next steps to clear the scene and make sure it’s safe.

“The road is likely to be closed for some time before the train can be moved so please avoid the area.”

Juliette Maxam, media and public relations manager for Greater Anglia, said about 50 passengers were still on the train which crashed and the company was arranging a replacement train to “rescue them”.

British Transport Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Board would be investigating the crash, Ms Maxam said.

All services from Clacton-on-Sea to London Liverpool Street had been delayed in both directions, and trains between Colchester and Clacton and Walton were also affected.
