Car driver killed in collision with Overland train in Victoria

Passengers and crew remain on board The Overland while police investigate the scene.

A woman has died after a collision between her car and The Overland passenger train near Cressy in south-west Victoria.

The collision happened at a level crossing east of Nelsons Road shortly before 5:00pm.

The driver died at the scene.

She is yet to be formally identified.

No other injuries have been reported at this stage.

The Overland runs between Melbourne and Adelaide, with the journey usually taking more than 10 hours.

A spokeswoman for Great Southern Rail, which operates The Overland, confirmed the collision and said the area was under the management of police and emergency services.

"At this time our passengers and crew remain on board the train while the area remains closed for investigations," she said.

Police said the collision involved a Melbourne-bound train and the cause of the collision was yet to be determined.

The Overland was involved in another fatal collision earlier this year.

An elderly woman died after the train struck her in the Adelaide Hills in late July.
