Jan. 19--More than three decades after Paul Reubens dazzled kids and adults alike with the big-screen version of what would become a hit kids show, "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," Netflix (and Judd Apatow) are bringing back the manchild for a new TV/streaming movie, "Pee-wee's Big Holiday."
Scheduled to begin March 18, the trailer providing the announcement promises much of the zany, inventive fun that defined the original "Pee-wee's Playhouse" television show.
In 1980, Reubens came up with his Pee-wee Herman character as part of a stage show called "The Pee-wee Herman Show" at the Groundlings Theatre. Five years later came the movie, then a year after that came CBS' smash "Playhouse" show, which ran from 1986 to 1990 on Saturday mornings.
In July 1991, Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure in an adult theater in Sarasota, Fla. The incident set the character back, and though Reubens had many bit parts years later -- "Mystery Men" and more recently, "The Blacklist" -- the Pee-Wee character has only just resurfaced.
In 2010, Reubens starred on Broadway in "The Pee-wee Herman Story."
Netflix had announced the project last year, alongside "Beasts of No Nation" and Adam Sandler's "Ridiculous Six," but no firm date was in place.
