Traffic has come to a standstill after a trailer caught fire on the M8.
Cars are backed up along the carriageway as emergency crews race to the stretch near Paisley.
Lanes are restricted eastbound – as black smoke billows into the air above.
A motorist said: “Nobody is moving.
“You can smell burning in the air and there are thick black clouds above the motorway.”
The alarm was raised around 12.45pm.
Fire crews have raced to the scene near junction 27.
Roads bosses are urging drivers to take alternative routes while the blaze is tackled.
It is not known if anybody has been injured.
