Trail of destruction as car smashes into parked vehicles before man 'rips off number plates and runs away'

These pictures show the destruction left behind after a driver smashed into parked vehicles along a busy Bolton road.

Residents say they heard an 'unbelievable' noise as a silver Volkswagen Golf crashed on Chorley Old Road at around midnight (July 15-16).

Two vehicles - a red Volkswagen 4x4, which was only a few months old, and a green van - have been severely damaged by the impact and are facing the possibility of being written off.

Emergency services descended onto Chorley Old Road following the collision, with the incident reported to police and firefighters visible in the images.

One eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News that a male could be seen ripping registration plates off the Golf after the crash before running from the scene.

Residents took to Facebook to express their shock at what had happened - describing the extreme sound of the collision.

Commenting on the Heaton and Doffcocker Notice Board, one neighbour said: "I heard the screech and thud... sounded like it had made a mess."

Another added: "Frightened the life out of me - wondered what the bloody hell was going on. Thought it had hit a house."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At around 11.30pm on Thursday (July 15), firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving three vehicles on Chorley Old Road, Bolton.

“One fire engine from Bolton fire station arrived quickly at the scene. The collision involved two cars and a van.

"Fire crews worked to make the scene safe and were in attendance for 45 minutes.”
