Trail of destruction after driver failed to stop after crash

Police are searching for the driver of a blue Ford Mustang after the vehicle tore a path of destruction through Gosford in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police say the car was travelling east on Victoria Street when it collided with two power poles before hitting a garbage can, which was thrown through a shop window and onto a Holden sedan causing minor damage to the second vehicle.

The driver failed to stop at the scene before police arrived, officers said, and it is not known if they suffered injuries as a result of the crash.

Police said the force of the crash caused the poles to become unstable. Ausgrid has advised the normally busy Victoria Street shopping centre will need to be isolated while the poles are replaced.

As a result, police have created traffic diversions at the intersection of the Central Coast Highway and Althorp Street, and the intersection of Central Coast Highway and Adelaide Street.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area while the road remains closed or seek alternative routes.

Anyone with information about the incident or the vehicle is urged to come forward.
