Trail Blazers GM felt ‘validation’ beating Thunder in the first round

Portland Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey believes the decision to keep the roster intact was validated during the postseason this year, especially against the Thunder in the first round.

Many have believed over the years that the Trail Blazers should have changed the roster some since the group has not been able to advance deep into the playoffs.

Prior to this year, the furthest the team had advanced was the second round during the 2015-16 season. They had suffered elimination in the first round in each of the past two seasons.

After the Trail Blazers were swept this week by the Golden State Warriors, Olshey believes the front office made the right decision to keep the same group around.

The Trail Blazers defeated the Thunder in five games during the first round. Damian Lillard sent the Thunder home with a historic performance in Game 5, capped by a 37-footer as time expired to advance to the next round.

Lillard averaged 33 points, six assists and 4.4 rebounds against the Thunder while he shot 45.3 percent from the field and 46.9 percent from three-point range.

Prior to being swept by the Warriors, the Trail Blazers beat the Denver Nuggets in seven games. Lillard averaged 26.9 points over the course of their playoff run.
