The Chargers lost a key piece to their offense in tackle Russell Okung. However, they were able to gain a player near the same caliber in former Panthers guard Trai Turner.
Turner officially became a member of Los Angeles on Wednesday. The 26-year old is happy to be making the transition from the East Coast to the West Coast.
“It’s kind of like a fresh start,” Turner said. “I get to be in a new facility, new teammates, new coaches, new city. I’m looking at it as like a rejuvenation of my football career.”
Turner, the former third-round draft pick, has developed into one of the premiere interior offensive lineman in the league, making five straight Pro Bowls, missing the accolade in only his rookie season. Turner’s played in 84 games (80 of which he started) since entering the league in 2014.
Turner is expected to start at right guard, which is the spot he played primarily during his time with Carolina. He’s already spoken with new offensive line coach James Campen, who also reunites with tackle Bryan Bulaga.
“I’m excited about getting coached up by him,” Turner said.
As the Chargers continue to retool their roster, especially the quarterback position where they’re in a good position to draft a rookie with the No. 6 overall selection in the upcoming, Turner is ready to be a wall for whoever that is.
“Whoever may be back there, I’m just ready to do my job so everyone around me can shine – because when they look good, I look better.”
