Trai Hume sends out title message to former teammates following Sunderland move

Trai Hume is hoping Linfield can finish off the job he helped start by retaining the Gibson Cup this season.

The 19-year-old defender bid farewell to the Blues this week after signing a four-and-a-half-year deal with Sunderland.

Hume's future now lies with the Black Cats, but he admits he will be keeping a close eye on the Irish Premiership title race.

The Northern Ireland Under 21 international played 17 top flight games this season, putting him in line for a league winner's medal if David Healy's side can go on to retain their crown.

They sit in pole position after 21 games, two points above Cliftonville at the Premiership summit, and departed Hume hopes his former teammates can finish the job.

“If the lads can go and win the title, it would be my first winner's medal in first team football," Hume told Linfield's website.

"I will be checking the scores as soon as I can but I have no doubt that we will win the league – that’s the standards we set here.

"I would be very happy for the squad, the manager and the fans, if we can do it.”

Hume also paid tribute to Linfield's supporters following his move to Sunderland.

He added: “I want to say that the Linfield fans have been brilliant with me the whole season, they haven’t said a bad word about me.

"The players here at Linfield are top notch and it’s sad leaving them but I’m sure they’ll go and do the business the rest of the season.

"Linfield is a top club and no matter who comes in, they are expected to win.”
