Tributes have been pouring in for a young Clontarf man who tragically died in a workplace accident.

Matthew Grimes, 19, died on Saturday afternoon while working at Dublin Port where Gardai and emergency services were unable to save the young man.

His mum and dad said he will be "deeply missed by all of his family, relatives and friends" with his funeral set to take place this week.

Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU) members expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Mr Grimes and admitted that deaths like his are "not an uncommon occurrence".

SIPTU transport division organiser, Karan O Loughlin, said: “Our members wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Matthew Grimes."

Five workers have died, and several others have been seriously injured, in various ports around Ireland, including Dublin Port, since 2018.

Ms O Loughlin continued: "While the circumstances of this tragedy have yet to be investigated, it highlights once more the potential dangers facing workers in the ports.

"It is now essential that the Government introduces stronger and mandatory safe working standards for all workers in our ports and docks.

"Our thoughts are with the family of this young man who so tragically lost his life in his workplace."
