One line of enquiry being pursued by gardai is that the child may have suffered an assault.

Sources have said that a man and a woman in the apartment have been speaking to Gardai about the incident as forensic specialists also examined the scene.

The two-year-old child, named locally as Santina Cauley, was found by Gardai in a critical condition inside a house on the south side of Cork city shortly after 5am.

She died in Cork University Hospital a few hours later and gardai launched an investigation.
