Tragic story behind phone numbers left written on New Brighton bench

A brightly coloured bench which has recently appeared on New Brighton promenade has a tragic story and a very important message behind it.

It was placed on the waterfront in memory of young mum Chloe McDaid, from Wallasey, who took her own life just a few weeks before her 25th birthday.

This weekend would have marked her 26th birthday.

The bench overlooks the New Brighton pirate ship and is painted purple as it was Chloe's favourite colour, with positive messages and numbers for suicide prevention helplines fixed to it.

Jessica Jones, one of Chloe's best friends who set up the bench by fundraising with Chloe's mum Mandy McDaid, said: "Chloe was a bright bubbly character who was always there to lift people's spirits, so we wanted the bench to do exactly that.

"We hope it may help somebody walking by who may need a few words of hope and encouragement. We have also included helplines and listening services for anybody who may be in need of them."

Chloe, described as a "fantastic mum", was found by her father at her home after she was discharged from hospital.

The 24-year-old had told medical professionals she was suicidal and had sought help with her mental health as far back as 2011, an inquest into her death heard earlier this year.

Ms McDaid, who worked as a barmaid and was mum to eight-month-old Melodie, was diagnosed with ADHD and moderate depression and had sought help for anxiety previously.

She had been described as "the kind of person who would light up a room with her smile."

She died at Arrowe Park Hospital on July 2, 2019.

At her inquest, Assistant Coroner Julie Golding gave a narrative finding, saying: "It's not possible to say if her death was anything other than a desperate cry for help."

Chloe's mum, Mandy McDaid, has called for more awareness about mental health, warning that suicide risks "becoming the norm".

The 54-year-old said: "She was a very social person and had lots of friends. She was the kind of person who would light up a room with her smile.

"And that's what we want to get across - she was also broken as well. She spoke to friends about different things that were going on, but it was not till we got to the hospital that we realised."

Chloe's mum said that she had lots of interests when she was younger like gymnastics and making clothes, and "always looked good".

In addition to the bench, family and friends of Chloe's have raised thousands of pounds for mental health support since her untimely passing.
