Tragic snorkelling teenager died 'testing ability to hold his breath underwater'

A teenage boy tragically died after trying to hold his breath while swimming out at sea, an inquest heard.

Oscar Montgomery, 17, went missing on May, 27, last year after entering the sea at a Dorset beach around 9.30am.

The Solihull teen was an experienced snorkeller and spearfisherman, reports Coventry Live.

He had travelled to Church Ope Cove in Portland last year after not being allowed in the water for some time due to coronavirus restrictions.

Following Oscar's failure to return from the sea, a search began involving two Royal Navy warships.

Despite search teams' best effort, his body was found at sea three weeks later on June 17.

Oscar's mum, Mary Montgomery, said her son's death showed the "dangers of extreme breath-holding without a buddy".

A coroner's officer told BirminghamLive : "On May 27, 2020, the deceased, who was an experienced snorkeller and spearfisherman, travelled to Church Ope Cove, Portland, to go snorkelling and spearfishing.

"He was last seen to enter the water at this location at approximately 9.30am that morning but failed to return.

"On June 17, 2020, his body was recovered from the water a short distance from the location where he was last seen.

"The conclusion of the coroner as to the death was misadventure."

The coroner has urged others to have assistance on hand if they carry out similar breath-holding attempts.

Last September Solihull School paid tribute to Oscar, saying he was "an incredible young man in every respect".

Posting on its Facebook page, the school said: "Remembering Oscar Montgomery on what would have been his 18th birthday.

"His legacy lives on through the Oscar Montgomery Environmental Foundation, a charity to raise awareness and support environmental projects and research activities. Oscar was an incredible young man in every respect."
