Tragic schoolboy, 13, found dead in icy river after going missing pictured

This is the first picture of a teenage boy whose body was found in an icy river after a heartbreaking appeal from his mum.

John James Ritchie-Wilson was discovered after family, friends and the emergency services launched a desperate search for the 13-year-old, who was reported missing on Sunday night.

Police were alerted following reports that a person had gone into the river near Toronto Bridge in Bishop Auckland, Co Durham.

John James' body was found in the rain-swollen River Wear, near his home, on Monday during a search involving police, firefighters and search and rescue specialists.

In a Facebook post, a friend wrote on behalf of parents Jane and James Wilson: "It is sad news, but right now that's all that is been said.

"Both of them are facing the most traumatic of experiences, but they are surrounded by love and support.

"Please allow them to grieve in the peace that they are so sorely desperate for.

"They appreciate all the well wishes, but if people not connected with them could stop messaging them it would be appreciated.

"Also if anyone has any information connected to this please contact the police and not the family. Thank you so much."

Before the discovery, worried Mrs Wilson had shared photos of her son in a desperate appeal for help from friends and local residents.

She wrote: "Please share, John James Ritchie- Wilson. 13cyr old, just under 5ft tall. bring my boy home!

"Missing since yesterday, Bishop Auckland. Possibly seen near Toronto Bridge.

"If any of his friends know ANYTHING msg me or call the police. And jj if u see this, ur not in trouble just please come home!"

A major search was launched on Sunday night after John James, known as JJ, went missing.

It continued the next morning amid heavy snowfall, focusing on a section of the river downstream from the Newton Cap viaduct, close to the grounds where the Kynren shows are produced.

The Wear was running quickly as the snow melted and flooded local roads.

Durham Constabulary said the boy's death is not being treated as suspicious.

Bishop Auckland Tory MP Dehenna Davison tweeted on Monday: "I'm devastated to hear the news that a body was found in the River Wear this morning.

"To lose a loved one is agonising, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and friends.

"My sincere thanks go to all the agencies involved in the search, including the local police, mountain rescue, and the coastguard.

"Their work is outstanding, especially in such difficult conditions.

"My thoughts also go out to the individuals who took part in the search, who I know will have had an emotional stake in it.

"Myself and my team will be there to offer support to anyone affected by this sad news."
