Tragic schoolboy, 12, killed when e-scooter crashed into bus as family 'desperately sad'

A 12-year-old schoolboy who tragically died after his electric scooter crashed into a bus has been named and pictured.

The boy, named locally as Mustafa, had been riding the e-scooter to school during morning rush hour just before 8am when the fatal incident unfolded, police said.

He never made it to his school, Saltley High School, in Birmingham, and emergency services rushed to the scene in a desperate effort to help him.

But Mustafa was later pronounced dead at the scene and heartbreaking tributes have poured in for the youngster online.

His "desperately sad" family have been in their local mosque in the wake of the tragedy and many people online offered their thoughts and prayers as well.

Mustafa’s uncle Wakas Rashid spoke to the Mail Online about his nephew’s sudden passing.

He said: “The family are devastated as you can imagine. This is a desperately sad time for us all.

“They have been in the mosque all evening where friends and family have been coming to pay their respects.”

The youngster leaves behind three siblings — one brother and two sisters.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said Mustafa was found in a "critical condition" with life-threatening injuries.

No passengers travelling on the bus needed treatment following the crash.

Detectives from West Midlands Police have spoken to several of those who were onboard at the time.

The road was cordoned off while they examined the scene and police are urging any witnesses to get in touch.

A spokesperson for the force said: "A boy has sadly died after a collision involving a bus in Birmingham today.

"The 12-year-old is believed to have been riding an e-scooter when he collided with a bus on Bordesley Green, near to the junction with Belchers Lane, just before 8am.

"He was sadly confirmed dead at the scene. The road remains closed this afternoon while our investigators work to establish what happened.

"The youngster's family has been told, and are being supported by specially trained officers."

Det Sgt Paul Hughes, of the serious collision investigation unit, made an urgent appeal for information such as dashcam footage.

He said: "This is an awful tragedy for the young boy's family and friends, and our thoughts are with them at this time.

"We've spoken to a number of witnesses, but still want to hear from any of the passengers on the bus who we've not yet spoken to, or from people who may have captured what happened on dashcam."
