Tragic rail track victim dies after being hit by train in North Lanarkshire

A person has sadly died after being hit by a train in North Lanarkshire.

British Transport Police rushed to Caldercruix station around 3pm on Tuesday, June 16, amid reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead the scene but no other details are available at this time.

Their death is not being treated as suspicious.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 3.01pm on 16/06 to Caldercruix station following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers attended but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

"Officers are in the process of identifying the person and informing their next of kin."

It comes after ScotRail announced the grim news earlier today.

Taking to Twitter, the operator said: "Sadly, due to a person being hit by a train between Blackridge and Caldercruix all lines are closed at the moment.

"Train services between Edinburgh and Helensburgh Central via Airdrie will be cancelled, delayed or terminated at and started back from Bathgate.

"We're working closely with the emergency services at the moment and I'll update you all as soon as I can."
