Tragic picnic: Aurangabad lawyer among two washed away by swollen stream in Ahmednagar

AURANGABAD: At least two persons, including a lawyer from Aurangabad, were swept away along with their car in an overflowing stream in Akole in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district late on Friday night, while one of their friends who managed to jump out of the car survived.

Police said that the three friends had stepped out for a picnic to Bhandardara village of Akole tehsil, when they inadvertently entered an overflowing water stream at Kolhar Ghoti situated between Varghonshi and Petshet.

The deceased have been identified as advocate Ashish Palodkar (34) of Palod in Sillod tehsil and Ramakant Deshmukh (33) of Talpimpanlgaon in Kannad tehsil, both from Aurangabad district. Their friend advocate Ananta Magar of Shingi in Hingoli district survived the incident.

Palodkar who practiced law in lower court had been residing in Aurangabad city at Khadkeshwar area and is survived by parents and sister, while Deshmukh was a farmer by profession and is survived by parents, wife and two kids.

Ahmednagar police said that while passing the road, they failed to gauge force of the overflowing stream and tried to cross over in the car. Before they could react to the situation, the gushing water dragged the car into the stream. Showing presence of mind, advocate Magar jumped out of the car and survived but seeing his friends get washed away and drown in the stream, he was so panicked that he could not even raise an alarm or narrate the incident.

Authorities said that some of the passersby spotted the drowning car and alerted the police, following which Rajur police rushed to the spot. Unable to enter the gushing water, the locals arranged an excavator and a tractor and pulled out the car, but till then the car has already spent about three hours under the water and the duos, who were stuck in the car had succumbed.

They said that identities of the deceased were established from their identity cards. The Rajur police shifted the bodies for autopsy to a nearby civil hospital and registered a case of accidental death in the early hours of Saturday.
