Tragic pensioner killed in fatal crash in car park in Douglas, Co. Cork named locally

A man who was tragically killed after an accident in Co Cork on Saturday afternoon has been named as Pete Newman.

Pete, who was aged in his 70s, was hit by a van earlier today in the car park of soccer team College Corinthians AFC in Douglas at around 3.30pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but he sadly didn't make it and was pronounced dead before he could be taken to hospital, CorkBeo reports.

Gardai cordoned off the scene and a forensic examination took place meanwhile the club has now suspended all activities "until further notice".

They paid tribute to Pete who they said was "loved and respected" by all there.

They said: "The club would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Peter (Pete) Newman who passed away following a tragic accident today.

"Pete was loved and respected by all in Corinthians and will be sadly missed. May he Rest In Peace"

Gardai have also appealed for witnesses to contact them at Anglesea station.

In a statement earlier a spokesman said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal collision, which occurred in a car park of a sports ground in Donnybrook, Douglas, Co. Cork, Saturday 26th September 2020 at approximately 3:30pm.

"The collision involved a van and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man in his 70s, was fatally injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The scene is now being examined by Forensic Collision Investigators.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who may have any information or camera footage (including dash-cam) to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
