An air ambulance and the Borders Search and Rescue team were also called to help and quickly found the stricken 74-year-old woman.

Despite their best efforts, the pensioner was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a 74-year-old woman having taken unwell at Scarlaw Hill near the Watch Water Reservoir in the Borders shortly before 3.30pm on Saturday, 1 August.

"She was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
