More than £93,000 was raised at Irvine’s Race for Life last year.
And now the call has gone out to Ayrshire people to sign up to take part in the 2022 event.
Last year, a ‘phenomenal’ £93,296 was raised at Race for Life Irvine after more than 900 people took part.
Many taking part were there in memory of Lynn Martin, a nurse who died from cancer just months before her wedding day.
Lynn, who worked at Ayr Hospital, was only 54 when she died on December 12 2020, after seven months of treatment during the pandemic.
She had already picked out her wedding dress and had been looking forward to marrying her partner Derek Thomson, of Irvine, at Western House Hotel, Ayr on June 12, 2021.
Lynn’s family, including her children Debbie and Mhairi Martin, Adrienne and Darren Thomson and three grandchildren all took part in Race for Life Irvine 2021.
An inspirational sign with Lynn’s picture took pride of place on the course.
Lynn’s partner Derek, 56, is now calling for people’s support once again.
He said: “A phenomenal amount was raised at Race for Life Irvine last year.
“It was an emotional day for all who knew and loved Lynn. We miss Lynn every single day.
“As a family we’d like to thank everyone in the community who contributed towards making Race for Life Irvine such a success last year. And we’d love for people to sign up again this year.

“I’ve lost my parents, best friend and the love of my life to cancer. That’s made me more determined than ever to keep fundraising to fund research so hopefully other families in the future don’t have to face the heartache we’ve been through.”
Lisa Adams, Cancer Research UK’s spokeswoman in Scotland, said: “Everyone can play their part to help beat cancer.
“January is the perfect time for people to commit to getting a little more active.
"By signing up to Race for Life, there’s the chance to raise money for life-saving research. Sadly, cancer affects all of us in some way.
"Whether people are living with cancer, taking part in honour of or in memory of a loved one with cancer or signing up to protect their own children’s future, everyone has a reason to Race for Life.
“Our Race for Life events are open to all. For some people, the Race for Life is literally a walk in the park. Slow and steady still wins. For others, it’s a jog.
"Others may opt to push themselves harder and take part in the 10K distance. But what is for certain is we’re looking forward to welcoming people of all ages and abilities. Race for Life Irvine will be fun, emotional, colourful, uplifting and an unforgettable event this year.”
Race for Life events across the UK this year will follow current government guidance to protect against COVID-19. Hand sanitiser will be provided at all events.
Entries are open now for the Race for Life Irvine which is on Sunday, June 12, at the Beach Park. The 10k event starts at 9.30am and the 3k and 5k start at 11am. People of all ages and abilities are welcome.
Anyone who joins this month can claim a special 50 per cent off the entry fee by using the code RFL22J50.
