Tragic mum treated for chest infection but she was suffering from combination of sepsis and pneumonia

A mother-of-one tragically died when a suspected chest infection turned out to be a deadly combination of sepsis and pneumonia.

Alison Powell, 35, drastically started losing weight at the beginning of June and complained of exhaustion and flu-like sysmptoms.

Her illness baffled doctors who continued to prescribe her strong antibiotics and inhalers to ease her pain.

What is Sepsis?

She was rushed to on August 2 by her husband Andy who could no longer watch her suffer.

Tragically, her liver and kidneys began to fail and she died just four days later on August 6. Alison, who lived in Langley Mill, Derby, leaves behind 16-year-old son Ryan.

Mrs Powell's mother, Julie Walker, says she is struggling to come to terms with the death of her first-born child.

The 53-year-old, of Langley Mill, said: "We are totally shocked. Me, her husband and her best friend were with her at the time, DerbyshireLive reports.

"We spent all night with her. I am just devastated. Things went downhill just a few months ago, she started feeling exhausted.

"She dragged herself out of bed for her son's prom. She wouldn't miss her son's prom for the world. I don't think it has fully hit him yet. I think deep down he is holding it all in."

Charity shop volunteer Mrs Powell had suffered with pneumonia and had a lung biopsy in 2018 but it was thought her health had returned to normal.

Her mother continued: "She did recently get a job as a care worker at Alexandra House in Eastwood and loved it. She had  to give it up.

"She had lots of friends. She was a devoted friend, wife and mother.

"We always said you were in Alison's life whether you liked it or not. She just loved friends and family. She wouldn't harm a fly.

"I can't get over the fact that we're not going to see her anymore."

A crowdfunding page has been set up with the hope of raising £2,000 to go towards Mrs Powell's funeral.
