Tragic Limerick dad Jason Corbett's family appear in CBS documentary to challenge 'Molly Marten's lies'

The family of murdered Irishman Jason Corbett have appeared in a documentary to defend his name.

Limerick native Jason was brutally murdered as he slept in his North Carolina home in August 2015.

His wife Molly Martens, 35, and her father Tom Martens, 68, were convicted of the second-degree murder in the 2017 trial.

The pair were sentenced to 20-25 years in prison but have appealed the convictions.

Jason's sister Tracey Corbett Lynch said the family participated in a CBS documentary to challenge allegations against her brother which were made by Molly and Tom Martens.

Family of Molly Martens set up Facebook page claiming she did not receive fair trial over death of Jason Corbett

In a statement, she said: "We felt the allegations levelled by Tom and Molly Martens needed to be publicly challenged in the US - and that is the reason for our involvement with the CBS programme.

“We will never falter in our campaign to ensure that Tom and Molly Martens serve the full sentence handed down by a North Carolina court for their terrible crime.

"We will also never tire of defending the good name and honorable reputation of a dearly loved father, brother, son, uncle, friend as well as a proud Limerick native and Irishman."

She says the family decided to appear in the TV series on the back of allegations made my the husband-killer in an interview two years ago.

Sister and brother-in-law of murdered Jason Corbett renew wedding vows over Christmas

The convicted murderer claimed she was afraid of her husband, with whom she has two children with.

However, the allegations were reportedly never made in court and she never gave evidence in her own defence at the trial.

According the Limerick Leader, Tracey Corbett Lynch's statement added: "Even before their 2017 trial, they had given an interview to a US TV channel in which they leveled unfounded and scurrilous allegations against Jason.

"These appalling allegations caused enormous hurt and upset to Jason's family, friends and work colleagues both in Ireland and the US.

"It speaks volumes of the type of people that Tom and Molly Martens are that they never once raised those same allegations during their murder trial."

The Corbetts are to appear in an episode of CBS' documentary series '48 hours' which is to air this Saturday at 8pm.
