Tragedy struck on a highway east of Toronto when a police chase ended in a devastating crash involving six vehicles, resulting in the deaths of two grandparents and their infant grandchild. The pursuit was initiated following an alleged liquor store robbery, with the suspect in the chased van also losing their life in the collision.
The victims, aged 55 and 60, along with their infant grandchild, tragically lost their lives in the crash. Additionally, another individual sustained injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The incident prompted an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which is mandated to look into cases where police officers are involved in serious injuries or fatalities.
During a news conference, SIU spokeswoman Monica Hudon revealed that the investigation was still in its early stages. One of the key aspects being probed is whether the police officers were authorized to continue the pursuit onto the highway. Furthermore, authorities are working diligently to confirm the exact number of individuals impacted by the tragic collision.
