Tragic couple killed in Cameron House blaze 'worked hard and had everything to live for'

The couple killed in the horror blaze at Cameron House had been enjoying a pre- Christmas break together.

Simon Midgley, 32, and his partner Richard Dyson, 38, died when fire ripped through the luxury hotel where they were staying as guests.

Their families finally received answers in court about the tragedy on Friday as Cameron House bosses admitted safety failings.

Freelance journalist Simon and TV producer Richard had travelled north from London for the trip.

Simon also ran his own PR company while Richard had worked on programmes such as reality TV show Tumble and Gareth Malone’s The Naked Choir.

Simon’s mum, Jane Midgley, spoke about the loss of her son in the months after the tragedy. She said Simon had been having the “time of his life” in Scotland but had sent her a text message saying he was looking forward to getting home for her Christmas dinner.

She said: “His last text message to me was saying he was looking forward to having my pigs in blankets.

“He said he was drowning in dreams and that 2018 was going to be his year.”

The couple had been together for around seven years, had a close group of friends, and loved to travel.

Jane said: “They were such beautiful boys. They worked hard and had everything to live for.

“Simon was such a kind, loving, caring son. He would make you feel so special and everyone loved him.

“I spoke to Simon the day before the fire and he was just full of dreams and positivity for 2018, for his future and for my future.

“He loved Christmas and was excited about travelling home with Richard to spend it with me.”

Simon was a freelance journalist at the London Evening Standard.

Former Chancellor and Evening Standard editor George Osborne released a statement following Simon’s death. He said: “The team here at the Standard are very sad to hear the awful news about Simon and Richard.

“We will miss Simon’s adventurous spirit.”
