Tragic collie dog dumped next to Scots road with maggot infested wound put to sleep

A probe has been launched after a badly injured dog had to be put to sleep after being abandoned next to a Scots road.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after the stray border collie was found in a layby on the B1377 from East Linton to North Berwick on May 13.

The male dog had collapsed and was suffering from a painful wound to his back end which had become infected with maggots.

He was rushed to a nearby vet but due to his level of suffering and poor condition, the heartbreaking decision was made to put him to sleep.

Scottish SPCA inspector Emma Phillips said “The male dog was found collapsed with a wound to his back end.

“He had fly strike and a maggot infestation in the open wound.

“We immediately took him for veterinary attention but the poor boy was suffering so much that the vet made the difficult decision to put him to sleep.

“He was black and white, overweight, and had a green slip collar on.

“We are hoping someone recognises him as we are keen to speak to the people responsible for the condition he was found in.

“If anyone has any information about who the dog belonged to or how he was abandoned in this way, please contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.

“Calls can be treated confidentially.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006.

Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
