Tragic baby boy found dead in canal may have died during childbirth, police say

A baby boy pulled from a West Midlands canal could have died during birth, police have revealed.

The newborn's body was found in the water at Rough Wood Country Park, in Willenhall at around 1pm on May 20.

A post-mortem examination suggests the tot could potentially have died during birth or in the hours immediately after.

West Midlands Police said they would "continue to work with experts" to establish how the boy's death was caused.

Earlier in the investigation police believed he may have spent up to four days in the water before being found.

In the wake of the tragic discovery, police spoke of their 'grave concerns' for the child's mother, who they fear may be in need of medical help.

But a week on, she has still not been found - prompting officers to return to the scene to hand out leaflets and speak to people in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Munro said: "I'm appealing today directly to mum to come forward.

"We will get you the medical support you need and we want to know exactly what has happened and will support you through that process.

"I'm also appealing to people who know mum or who have information to come forward and speak with us, in confidence if need be, and provide us with the information we need to further this investigation."

Dt Munro said in a statement last week: "This discovery is simply tragic. The death of this baby is absolutely heart-breaking."

Chief Superintendent Andy Parsons, from Walsall Police, added: "I'm shocked and saddened about this deeply tragic discovery.

"My thoughts are with him and the wider community who I know are upset and concerned about the nature of what happened.

"We've got local officers in the area offering reassurance, please do speak to them if you have any concerns."
