Tragedy strikes Mingenew grandfather twice

There was little that could be done to save Mick McCarthy's home once the blaze took hold.

Fire has destroyed a home in Mingenew in WA's mid-west just months after the family buried their seven-year-old who was killed in a truck accident.

Mick McCarthy, 65, has cared for his grandsons Michael and Daniel from a young age.

He and his grandson Daniel escaped with just the clothes on their backs when the fire broke out around midday on Saturday.

Daniel's brother Michael was killed in March this year.

The community is rallying to help the pair.

Spokesman Rod Beattie witnessed the blaze.

"I was just heading down the street and I saw Mick's house alight. Within 20 minutes it was unsalvageable, it was gone," he said.

"Being an older house it caught alight fairly quickly but they got out with the clothes on their back and that was it."

He described Mick as an "all-round decent guy" who was named Mingenew's Senior Citizen of the Year last year for his work in the community.

"We don't want to raise a million dollars, we just want to try and rehome him," he said.

"The best thing we'd like to do is try and make enough to get a little kit home to put back on the block.

"Within a day we've raised over $8,000."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

It is not believed to be suspicious.

Anyone who would like to contribute to funding can do so via the family's GoFundMe page.
