Tragedy on the M62 as motorcyclist killed in crash and man dies in fall from bridge

A motorcyclist left critically injured after a collision on the M62 has died.

And police have confirmed that a man who fell from a bridge over the motorway has also passed away.

The separate incidents caused long rush-hour tailbacks on Wednesday morning.

The M62 was closed in both directions between junctions 22, Rishworth Moor, and 24, Ainley Top, near Huddersfield, for investigation work after the collision involving a motorcyclist and a stationary vehicle was reported at 1am.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The 50-year-old motorcyclist, a man from outside of West Yorkshire, died as a result of the collision."

He hasn't been named.

Motorists caught up in knock-on traffic delays after the tragedies have been praised by police for their patience.

Detective Superintendent Jim Griffiths said: "The two incidents meant there was a significant impact on the road network, especially for motorists looking to get to work in and around rush-hour.

M62 closed following 2 incidents

"I appreciate that the closures caused significant disruption but they were necessary to allow the emergency services to go about their work. Any decision to close the motorway is not taken lightly and the road has now reopened.

"I would like to thank motorists who were caught up in the traffic for their patience and understanding as we worked to investigate what had happened and to get the road reopened."

Diversions were put in place until 11.50am on Wednesday, but long tailbacks remained.

Police meanwhile are now appealing for witnesses to both incidents to come forward.
