Tragedy of mum who took her own life 18 months after her best friend was murdered

A mum took her own life 18 months after her best friend was murdered, an inquest has heard.

The body of Kiera Michelle Pearson, 31, was found in Tonge Cemetery, less than half a mile from her home in Bury Road, Tonge Fold, Bolton, on September 11 2020.

During a documentary inquest at Bolton Coroner's Court, assistant coroner for Manchester West, Stephen Teasdale read out a statement from Ms Pearson's close friend Michelle Soufi.

Ms Soufi said that Ms Pearson had struggled with her mental health for the past two years, due to 'traumatic experiences'.

Within a relatively short space of time, Ms Pearson's ex-partner's father died in her arms, her grandmother died, and her best friend Maggie Smythe was murdered - an event which is said to have 'affected her greatly'.

Ms Soufi told the court that Ms Pearson's 13-year-old son Leon had behavioural problems, which were complicated by the absence of his father.

According to Ms Soufi, Ms Pearson attempted to take an overdose of sertraline in January 2020.

In June, Ms Pearson discovered that her ex-partner had fallen pregnant, which 'upset' her.

In August, she lost her job at Jump Xtreme trampoline park and Ms Soufi said that Ms Pearson had started drinking more.

On August 30, Ms Soufi said that Ms Pearson got extremely drunk and the next day, she apologised and text Ms Soufi: "Everything's f***ed up."

A few days later, on September 2, Ms Soufi went to see Ms Pearson, along with another friend - Emma Thornton.

Ms Soufi said that Ms Pearson showed 'no emotion' and kept saying she 'was done' and 'didn't want to be there anymore'.

Ms Thornton and Ms Soufi tried to explain that Leon and all of her friends needed her and Ms Pearson started to cry.

Ms Pearson then suggested that she was going to take her own life and said: "I've set it up, I've done it."

Worried about her, Ms Soufi and Ms Thornton arranged to meet up with Ms Pearson later and 'get her out of the flat'.

They left at around 2.30pm and arranged to come back shortly.

Shortly after they left, Ms Pearson messaged Ms Soufi and said: "Please don't tell anyone. I will sort myself out".

Ms Soufi tried to ring Ms Pearson at 3.49pm but could not get through, so went around to her house. However Ms Pearson was not in and she was not at her mum's house either.

Nine days after Ms Pearson went missing, a dog handler from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) found her dead at Tonge Cemetery.

Police confirmed that there was a Whatsapp message on Ms Pearson's phone, which had been typed out but not sent, meant for her brother Jason.

It read: "Please look after mum and please make sure Leon goes somewhere where he's gonna be happy and live the life he deserves.

"He's a good kid deep down and he's going to do great things.

"Love you all."

GMP said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Ms Pearson's death.

In a statement, police coroner's officer Julieann Hyde told the court that she spoke at length with Ms Pearson's brother Jason, last month.

She said that the family were 'traumatised' by the death, in particular, her mother Donna.

Mr Pearson told Ms Hyde that his mum was 'struggling' and had 'more bad days than good'.

Ms Pearson's GP at Tonge Fold Surgery, Dr John Scott, said that Ms Pearson was first started on sertraline in August 2019, following recent bereavements and her break-up.

As well as the sertraline overdoes, Dr Scott also told the court that she self-presented at Royal Bolton Hospital with suicidal thoughts, in the same month.

She was seen several times between August 2019 and February 2020 and in February 2020, Ms Pearson indicated that her son was a 'strong protective factor' against suicide or self-harm.

Pathologist Dr Patrick Waugh confirmed that the medical cause of death was 'hanging'.

He added that there were no drugs in her system.

Mr Teasdale recorded a conclusion of suicide.
