Tragedy of mum-of-three mauled to death by pet dogs no longer being investigated by police

Police have closed their investigation into the death of a mum-of-three who was tragically mauled by her two American Bulldog pets.

Elayne Stanley, 44, was savagely attacked by the two animals in the living room of her terraced home on Graham Road in Widnes more than three weeks ago.

The s lightly-built woman was not strong enough to fight off the out-of-control dogs, called DJ and Billy, and she suffered fatal injuries on September 24.

Now, the ECHO has learnt that Cheshire Police is no longer probing the fatality.

The matter will be referred to the county's coroner.

Because the animals were a legal breed, and it was Ms Stanley's responsibility to take care of them, who was at a private address, the case is not being considered as a criminal.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "The woman's death is not being treated as a crime.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Police who arrived at the scene were forced to shoot DJ as they were unable to calm him down.

Billy, a female dog was able to be taken to a secure kennel but has since been put down.

No arrests were made in connection with the tragedy.

Close pals believe the dogs turned on its owner after being unnerved by an argument between Ms Stanley, and her 22-year-old daughter Louise.

Ms Stanley's two younger twin daughters, aged around 12, were inside the house when the dogs turned hostile.

They were seen at the back window of the property, shouting to neighbours, "the dogs have got mum!"

Other residents said they heard an adult yelling at the children to stay upstairs, with a male voice crying, "I can't get to her!".

Ms Stanley's ex-boyfriend, Paul Leigh, 43, who used to own the two dogs, said they had never bitten or acted aggressively in the past.
