Tragedy of aspiring jockey who lived in constant pain and died after operation to save her

An aspiring jockey tragically died after complications from an operation to save her.

In 2015, just a week before her Year 11 prom, Celine Paige Biddle-Walker-Ellis had been diagnosed with dyskeratosis congenita - a very rare bone marrow failure which it does not make sufficient blood cells.

She had been in lots of pain and had assumed it was appendicitis but her diagnosis turned her world upside down - leaving her with painful bruises unable to compete as a professional jockey.

Her mum Jinnie Walker-Ellis told the inquest at Manchester's Coroners Court earlier how she had a passion for horses from a young age and there was 'nothing else she really wanted to do'.

Despite being in and out of hospital for the next five years, the 21-year-old 'always put everybody first' and was so 'strong and independent'.

In March 2020, she made the decision to have a potentially life-changing stem cell transplant, against her mum's wishes.

But, talking to the coroner, Jinnie said she supported her daughter who was old enough to make her own decisions and fiercely independent.

In a statement read to the court, a doctor at the Christie Hospital in Withington described how there had been complications after the procedure - leaving Celine with 'graft versus host' disease.

Graft versus host disease is a side effect after a transplant when the immune cells from the donor (known as the graft cells) attack the recipient's (known as the host's) tissues.

Celine, who is from Wythenshawe, went to the hospital for the last time on August 18 and died two weeks later on September 3 from a bleed on the brain.

The coroner said the trainee professional racehorse rider died from 'recognised complications of necessary treatments'.

Her mum said: "She was a remarkable young woman, never complained and was always there for everybody, as poorly as she was.

"The picture is from her prom, still smiling after a week in hospital when it all started. She was so brave and such a waste of young life, so badly missed."

The family plan on having a memorial service a year on from her death after guests couldn't attend because of the pandemic.
