Tragedy in Dalkey as young man dies in hospital after getting into swimming difficulty

A man in his 20s has died in hospital after being winched from the sea at Dalkey yesterday.

The young man got into difficulty in the water at Vico at about 3:40pm on Thursday.

The alarm was raised after people on the coast spotted him and emergency services were called to the scene.

The Coast Guard, along with Dun Laoghaire RNLI, responded and the swimmer was winched into Rescue R116 helicopter.

Members of Dublin Fire Brigade and the National Ambulance Service along with local gardai were also involved in the rescue operation.

He was airlifted to Beaumont hospital by the Coast Guard to be treated for his injuries but he subsequently died in hospital.

A Garda spokesperson told Dublin Live: "Gardaí and emergency services attended an incident at a beach near Dalkey yesterday, Thursday 3rd June 2021.

"A man in his 20s was taken from the water shortly before 4pm after getting into difficulty swimming.

"His was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he later passed."
