Tragedy as young jockey killed in pony race at Kerry racing festival

A pony racing meeting was cancelled in Kerry after the tragic death of a teenage jockey on Saturday.

The jockey died after injuries sustained in a race on Rossbeigh Beach as part of the Glenbeigh Racing Festival.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of an incident at Rossbeigh Beach in Co.Kerry earlier this evening at approximately 5.20pm.

"A male in his teens received treatment at the scene following the incident but was later pronounced deceased.

"His body has since been removed to the Morgue at Kerry University Hospital."

Glenbeigh Races announced that all further races and events scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled after the tragedy.

A statement on social media read: "Due to a tragic event at the races on Rossbeigh beach today all further events are cancelled this weekend."

A number of races had already taken place at the meeting before the tragedy occurred.
