Tragedy as woman suffers seizure in pub cake-eating contest and dies

A woman died during a cake-eating contest at a busy pub yesterday.

The 60-year-old was taking part in the challenge to eat as many cakes as possible when she suffered a seizure.

Paramedics dashed to The Beach House Hotel in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia, but were unable to save the woman.

The venue has since expressed its "deepest condolences to the friends and family of one of our patrons following the tragic event at our venue on Australia Day".

The nation celebrated its national holiday - Australia Day - yesterday.

Eating contests are popular across the country on the holiday.
