Police have cordoned off a section of woodland following the discovery of a woman's body in County Durham.

Emergency services were called to a pathway near Spennymoor bypass at 9.45am on Wednesday following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

Officers cordoned off a woodland area as a number of police vehicles and an ambulance descended on the scene.

Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

It is understood that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Officers were called shortly before 9.45am this morning (October 30) to the pathway between Ivy Close and Spennymoor bypass following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

"Paramedics also attended but sadly the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
